SUBBASE CONSTRUCTION

ASPHALT

According to one industry poll, about 70% of the tennis courts in the world are hard courts— asphalt or concrete pavements, generally covered with an acrylic colored surface coating system. The coating system protects the court from the elements, enhances its appearance, and determines the playing characteristics of the court. 

In general, hard courts are low-maintenance and do not require daily care. For this reason, they are an ideal choice where an owner does not plan to supervise play, has limited time to care for the court, and/or where players will be keeping courts in use for all or most of the year in colder climates. Outdoors, rain does a natural cleaning on hard courts, though regularly sweeping or cleaning a court will help avoid stains that can occur when leaves or other debris are left lying on the surface. Mildew or algae, which are sometimes a problem in warmer, more humid regions, can be removed with a mild herbicide, with a bleach and water solution or with a pressure washer. 

Asphalt courts are the most common type of tennis courts because they provide
good value for the cost and are easy to care for; however, cracking is a natural part of the weathering and aging of asphalt. 

Generally, a hard court produces a medium pace game. This speed can be adjusted according to the type of surface system that is applied. A smooth surface will increase ball skid and decrease the effect of spin, producing a faster game, while a highly-textured surface will reduce skid and enhance the effect of spin, producing a slower game. 

ASPHALT COURTS 

Asphalt is a liquid material refined from petroleum. When liquid asphalt is mixed with graded stone aggregate, compacted and allowed to cure, it becomes asphaltic concrete, also known as asphalt or blacktop. 

Liquid asphalt can be combined, mixed and delivered to a court via various processes. Asphalt courts usually are constructed using hot plant mix asphalt. Often the choice of a specific type of asphalt and stone aggregate is determined by soil or climatic conditions, by the availability of materials in the area or by the expertise of the contractor. 

Asphalt is a flexible pavement, giving slightly with the ground’s movement due to settling, to the action of water or to freeze-thaw activity. However, as asphalt ages, it oxidizes, shrinks and hardens, making it less flexible and more subject to cracking. 

Cracking is the most common problem with asphalt courts and occurs in all courts with age. Cracking can be expected with normal exposure to weather, temperature cycles, and aging. These cracks will continue to develop into larger cracks, which can be exacerbated with exposure to water, vegetation or mold, so they should be treated promptly. Sometimes cracks are caused by improper use of materials, improper construction or settlement in the subgrade. 

Asphalt courts are built up in several layers. First the earthen subgrade is shaped, compacted and sloped according to the site plan. Next, a gravel base is installed, usually 4” to 6” in thickness. A commonly used size and grading requirement for gravel base materials is shown below:

On top of the properly compacted gravel base, an intermediate course of asphalt is installed and compacted. The thickness of the intermediate course varies, based on the geographic location, but in most areas is about 1-1/2” to 2”. A commonly used size and grading requirement for the intermediate course aggregate is shown below:

Finally, a surface course of asphalt is spread and compacted to a uniform density and thickness. The thickness of the surface course is variable based on the geographic region; however, in most areas it varies from 1” to 1-1/2”. A commonly used size and grading requirement for the surface course aggregate is shown below:

FINISHED ASPHALT PAVEMENT GUIDELINES 

Traditionally, guidelines have suggested simply that the finished surface of a tennis court should not vary more than x inches and y feet from a true plane. In actuality, there are at least four separate measures that can be made for the accuracy of the installation of a hard surface court: 

Slope – Asphalt courts are sloped in a true plane a minimum of .83% (1:120) to a maximum of 1.00% (1:100). Side to side is the preferred direction of slope; however, it can also be end to end or corner to corner if side to side cannot be achieved. Consideration should be given to sloping indoor courts slightly to aid in removal of water when washing the courts. 

Planarity – Planarity is the degree to which a surface is constructed as designed in one true plane. The surface also must be located at the designed elevation and slope because the elevation and grade of the surface tie it into the drainage system. According to the ITF, the finished court should not vary more than +/- 3/8” from the designed elevation within the Primary Playing Area. Planarity and slope are commonly measured with a transit or laser level. 

Evenness – In order to drain properly and to be acceptable for play, a surface must be smooth and regular, lacking humps and dips. An even surface will not cause ball deflection or create a player tripping hazard. As a measure of evenness, the surface should not vary more than 1/4” in 10’ when measured in any direction using a straightedge. 

Small Irregularities – Small deviations over a large distance that fall within the evenness standard will not affect player movement or ball bounce, but small deviations over a short distance, such as those caused by irregular seams, expanded aggregate or roller marks, may affect play. For that reason, a third measure—no deviation in the asphalt surface greater than 1/8” in 18”—should be considered. 

Once construction of the asphalt pavement is completed, the asphalt should be allowed to thoroughly cure. Color coatings won’t bond effectively or evenly to an inadequately cured surface. Curing may take from 14 to 30 days, depending upon site conditions and weather conditions, composition of the asphalt and the recommendations of HATKO.

SURFACE CHECKS, REPAIRS, PREPERATION AND CLEANING

To properly apply a Color Coating system, first, clean the pavement thoroughly. All foreign materials must be removed. Depending upon conditions, blowing debris, hosing or scraping loose material often is sufficient. At other times, particularly when landscaping or fencing work has left mud and debris on the court, power washing may be required. Mortar dust on the cured surface and loose particles are removed by blowing, scraping, brushing etc. The oil and grease residues are cleaned with detergent water. If neutralization is necessary, the surface is wiped with 3-4% hydrochloric acid or acetic acid solution and washed with pressurized water. 

Next, the pavement is flooded with water and allowed to drain to check for planarity. Low areas, or “birdbaths,” are defined as any areas where standing water more than 1,5mm deep (commonly measured using a coin) remains after drainage of the area has ceased or after one hour at 20 °C or above in sunlight. Before correcting birdbaths, however, it is important to determine their cause. Are the birdbaths actually low areas, or are they created by adjoining high areas? A simple string test can provide an answer. High areas should be leveled by scraping or grinding. Low areas in the surface should be patched by HATKO PATCH BINDER and leveled according to the recommendations of HATKO prior to proceeding with coating.

RESURFACER

HATKO Resurfacer is water-based acrylic binder, apply with mixing the silica sand and its used for the concrete and asphalt bases for adherence the upper layers, pores filling and tolerating the surface undulations and irregularities.

HATKO Resurfacer is available in 70 kg plastic drums, should be stored at room temperature. Storage area climate condition should not be above 30°C and below 10°C. If stored in appropriate conditions, the shelf life of HATKO Resurfacer is 12 months from the date of manufacture. Material must be protected from freezing during transportation, storage and application.

Once the pavement has been properly prepared, the next step is the application of Resurfacer. No coating work, including the RESURFACER, should be performed when rain is imminent or when the temperature is below 10 °C and above 60 °C for maximum. If the temperature of the surface is above 60 ºC’s, the material definitely should not be applied.

Before applying the acrylic Resurfacer make sure the surface is completely dry. Low temperature or high humidity increases the drying time. The maximum surface temperature allowed is 60˚C.

Equipment required for Acrylic Resurfacer application: Hand mixer, neoprene squeegee, plastic bucket.

MIXING RATIO & PREPERATION OF THE RESURFACER

For 1 sqm of application 600gr of Resurfacer, 300gr of 60-80 mesh Silica Sand and 300gr of Water should be mixed for a homogeneous mixture. Mix them with a min.1200 W hand mixer at slow speed for 1 min. and then continue for 2 min at high speed.

ESTIMATED CONSUMPTION

1kg of mixture Resurfacer can be applied on 1,11 m² of surface. However, consumption varies depending on the roughness of the surface.

APPLICATION GUIDE

After cleaning the surface, Acrylic Resurfacer must be applied on the surface all in the same direction. If the surface is hot, it should be first dampened with spraying water. Mixed and Prepared Resurfacer is poured on the court with a plastic bucket.

Overlapping of the application should be prohibited. An experienced squeegee operator will note any previously undetected variations in the pavement, which should be repaired prior to Color Coating. Following application, Resurfacer should be thoroughly dried and cured to prevent future surface peeling. If shrinkage cracks appear, they should be addressed prior to application of subsequent coats of material. Special care must be taken in the application of the RESURFACER if the pavement is rough or if it has an excess number of voids in the surface. One or more RESURFACER coats, should be applied to remove minor surface irregularities and to fill the voids in the asphalt surface course.

COARSE CUSHION

HATKO Coarse Cushion is a high elastic non-pigmented sub base material containing 0.5-2.0mm of rubber granules and special 100% high-performance binder.

Coarse Cushion are Ready to Mix, depending upon the temperature it can bi diluted with water up to 5% . For a homogeneous mixture of materials, mix them with a min.1200 W hand mixer at slow speed for 1 min. and then continue for 2 min at high speed.

On the surface all in the same direction. If the surface is hot, it should be first dampened by spraying water. Mixed and Prepared Cushion is poured on the court with a plastic bucket.

Coarse cushion rubber elastic pad material is applied by special neoprene squeegee cushion apparatus on parallel layers from one end of the surface through the other. After each level dries completely, next level can be started, and layer should be applied to make 90-degree angle with the subsequent layer. In case application is made in hot weather, water should be sprayed on the surface to keep it moist.

COLOR COAT

HATKO Color Coat is an Acrylic paint containing silica sand particles Special granulated quartz silica sand-filled 100% acrylic latex binder, which can be produced in special colors upon request; high quality coating.       

USAGE

It has been formulated for a particular texture structure in order to control the game speed. 2 layers of quartz sand (350g/m² per layer), 1 layer of sand (300g/m²) are applied. Applying cushion apparatus for rubber elastic pad material provides a uniform distribution of very smooth quartz silica sand granules even to the smallest spot of the surface, and makes a hard and high tear resistant coating.

CONSUMPTION

Color Coat maximum dilution ratio for natural pigmented paint is 3:1, With 1 kg of Color Coat 1,0 m² of surface can be coated. However, consumption varies depending on the roughness of the surface.

MIXING RATIO & PREPERATION OF THE COLOR COAT

1st Layer : HATKO Color Coat (500-600 gr/m²)+ %40-%50 silica-sand + %20-%30 water 

2nd Layer : HATKO Color Coat (250-350 gr/m²) +%10-%20 silica-sand + %30-%40 water 

3rd Layer : HATKO Color Coat (150-200 gr/m²) + %10-%25 water for fast courts.* 

*If the court surface is required to be slower, silica sand of a percentage %5-%10 could be added.

 Acrylic Color Coat is diluted with Water according to above mixing ratios for each layer, for a homogeneous mixture of materials, mix them with a min.1200 W hand mixer at slow speed for 1 min. and then continue for 2 min at high speed.

APPLICATION GUIDE

Three coats of Color Coating, are applied with a squeegee. There are several theories regarding the application of Color Coatings. Some installers recommend coats of color be applied in alternate directions. Others believe all coats should be applied in the lengthwise direction since the flow of play in tennis is almost entirely lengthwise. Still others believe Color Coatings should be applied in a crosswise direction since the shorter crosswise pass may result in more uniform application and minimize the appearance of “brush strokes.” In any case, the coating should be applied smoothly and to a uniform thickness over the entire court surface. This requires an experienced applicator and careful attention to the application.

LINE PAINT

Acrylic paint for playing area lining is an Acrylic paint, which can be produced in special colors if requested, is high-quality line paint. Used on the playing area to determine the required lining quantity.

Line Paint

USAGE: 0.03 kg / m²

Using a taping machine and masking tape, the lines are taped. Lines are painted with one or two coats of acrylic line paint recommended by HATKO The line paint should contain the same amount and type of sand for consistency of ball bounce and to minimize the likelihood of player injury from slipping on the line. Oil, alkyd or solvent vehicle paint is unsuitable for tennis court lines and should not be used.

Once coated and thoroughly dried, the court is lined. All measurements on a court diagram are to the outside of each line. No measurement should vary more than .5” in length and .25” in width from the exact measurement. The standard color of tennis court markings is white.

 

RUBBER MAT / GLUE

USAGE

HATKO Rubber Mats are available in 4-12mm in thickness 1.2m width and up to 20m length. The weight of 1 square meter of  the product is 0,8kg/mm.

HATKO Rubber Matts are available in various thickness from 4mm up to 12mm. The Width of Rolls are 1.25m width and Length can be from 10m up to 20m. The Weight of the matts are 0,9kg/m² and The Roll diameter of 4mm of 20m length is 36cm.

Equipments and Materials required for Rubber Mat installation: Hand mixer, notched trowel, Hatko 2 Component Glue and Weights.

INSTALLATION GUIDE

Rubber Mats or unpacked and unrolled on the with inner sides are facing down. The rolls should be kept as freely unrolled to adopt the relative humidity and relaxation over a day.

Leave the rolls for relaxation for 24 hours. 

The Cushion diluted with water is mixed in low speed for 2 minutes.

Two Component Hatko Glue is mixed with a Hand Mixer and mixed in 2 minutes.

And The Prepared Glue is Applied on the Surface with a Notched Trowel.

And the Relaxed rolls are glued down with a firm pressure creating no bumps, Hi-Lo points or air bubbles. An experienced installer will not allow any voids or gaps in between the rolls. Overlapping of the application should be prohibited. An experienced installer will note any previously undetected variations in the pavement, which should be repaired prior to installation. Following installation, Rubber Mat and Glue should be thoroughly dried and cured to prevent future surface peeling. 1 kg of two components Glue is used per sqm.

UV COAT

UV Coat is a natural 100% acrylic latex binder, UV strength enhancer non-pigmented flexible topcoat with 100% high performance binder.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Color: Natural

Curing conditions: at 20˚C and %60 relative humidity 

Overcoating interval: approx. 4 hours

Estimated curing time: minimum 24 hours 

Minimal application temperature: 14˚C                                                                                                               

Low temperature or high humidity increases the drying time.
Maximum application temperature is 60˚C.                                                                                                                          

PREPARATION OF SURFACE

can be applied after the complete drying of the previous layer.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            

CONSUMPTION

Natural UV Coat can be applied in a single layer, with 1 kg of material 3,3 m² can be covered in a single layer.
For a homogeneous mixture of materials, mix them with a min.1200 W hand mixer at slow speed for 1 min. and then continue for 2 min at high speed.

APPLICATION GUIDE

UV coat application should be made to be in the same direction to the surface
Drying and Curing Time: can be applied only in one layer, and need at least 24 hours needed for complete curing.                                       

CLEANING

All tools used in the application can be cleaned with water before drying.                                                   

MATTERS TO BE CONSIDERED DURING APPLICATION

Weather Conditions : UV coat absolutely should not be applied in rainy weather (while raining), the surface temperature should be minimum 14˚C and 60 °C for maximum. If the temperature of the surface is above 60˚C’s, the material definitely should not be applied. 

Frost protection: UV coat must be protected from freezing during water-based acrylic materials storage and transportation.
