FIFA Quality Field Tests
FIFA standards have various dimensions of football fields. But most important standards are about the surface and material of the field. Today, natural grass has high costs and hard maintenance and construction processes. This makes synthetic football fields more preferable. In order to earn FIFA certificate, there are some special tests about the field. These tests are;
- Force reduction,
- Vertical deformation,
- Rotational traction,
- Vertical ball rebound,
- Horizontal ball roll.
On the vertical ball rebound test, a FIFA certified ball is dropped from 2m. and measure the height of the bounce three times. The officials make this test at 6 different spots of the field. If the average is between 60-100 cm, it is FIFA one star, but if the height id between 60-85 cm, it is FIFA two stars certification.
Another test is the horizontal ball roll test. Again at 6 different spots of the field, officials drop the ball from 1 m with a 45° angle. If the ball rolls 4-10 m FIFA one star, and 4-8 m is FIFA two stars certification.
About preventing sports injuries, officials make the force reduction test. If the reduction is between 60-70% it is two stars, and 55-70% is one star FIFA certification. These results also show the compatibility of the field to the play. And one final test is rotational traction. Between 30-45 Nm is two stars, and 25-50 Nm is one-star certification. This final is also important about sports injuries.
The cost of total field construction ranges according to these results.
Construction Steps of FIFA Quality Artificial Football Turf
Although there are differences between indoor and outdoor types, football field construction has 8 main steps which are;
- Excavating foundation,
- Preparing infrastructure (watering, electric, and drainage systems),
- Earthwork and material filling,
- Laying artificial turf,
- Construction of fence systems,
- Construction of roof systems,
- Installing lighting and other systems (like a scoreboard, etc.)
- Preparing the pitch (installing goalposts and drawing lines)
These are about indoor fields. In outdoor fields, you don’t have to construct roof systems.
