What is polyurethane floor coating and how to apply?
Polyurethane floor coating is a type of coating which is very popularly preferred for sports fields. The main purpose of polyurethane is to protect sports field surfaces from any kind of deformations. It is a protective layer applied to the top surface. So what is polyurethane?
Polyurethane is a chemical element in which polymers compound to a group called carbamates. A polyurethane coating is a highly elastic anti-corrosion surface coating which is famous for its shining and long-life endurance. There are so many different types of polyurethane which change according to the purpose. Basically there are two types according to aim, which are:
- Industrial facilities (or purposes),
- Sports field applications
These coatings also have some sub-groups like sound-proof or not, or opaque or transparent. It is nearly a mandatory application for industrial purposes because of its benefits. On the other hand, polyurethane floor coating application is a very common solution for sports fields at schools and parks. Polyurethane floor finish has more than 20 years of lifetime and these fields will be active for many long years.
Where to Apply Polyurethane Coating?
We mentioned that there are two general use areas that industrial and sports fields. Today we will talk more about sports fields. Today, Notably basketball fields, tennis courts, athletics fields are subject to the polyurethane. Normally sports fields have 5 construction layers but with polyurethane, total layers reach 6.
Polyurethane is generally not suitable for the football fields, because of its solid structure. Football fields are more elastic and softer in order to prevent unintended injuries in case of falling. But polyurethane surfaces are more prone to the sports harms.
In the basketball game, a more stern surface is better because the players should jump and the ball should bounce easily. This is more likely on solid but flexible floors like polyurethane. Professional basketball fields are mostly tiled floor which has similar characteristics of poly. The main difference is tiles are made of wood and the poly is made of granules. The polyurethane floor coating application is suitable for amateur sports fields like at schools or parks. But it doesn’t provide the requirements of the professional games.
On the other hand, polyurethane is very applicable to the tennis and athletics fields. It is more durable and practical than acrylic, so generally preferred instead of acrylic.
There are so many other places that polyurethane is preferred which are:
- Multi-purpose sports fields,
- Chemical product factories,
- Parking lots of malls,
- Aircraft maintenance hangars,
- Car service stations.
And so many more places which have decent surfaces. Our company also give the root preparing services for polyurethane application.
Polyurethane Application Steps
Before applying polyurethane, a detailed site survey is crucial. If the field is appropriate, or after preparing it, a detailed cleaning makes the surface neutral, dust-free, and moist-free. After neutralization, these steps will follow:
- The surface is coated with double-component rubber which is adhesive,
- 8 mm roll material is laid on the ground,
- The black granule layer is filled with a material called sealer,
- 2 mm thick polyurethane material is coated on the sealer,
- The polyurethane floor finishing drying period begins.
- After this period, the field is painted with a matte color.
These are the steps of polyurethane applying. Our company has so many years of experience and is ready to assist you about anything.
